Preacher Boy Music Updates...
Well, as it always seems of late, this is a long time coming, but there's lots of news to share, so thank you for your patience!
There is a new soundtrack, a new video, a newly produced album, and a new project, featuring Preach and Will Scott singing, playing, and writing together! (there is actually a new bit of video for that as well...)
***Film Soundtrack
Preach recently scored his first feature film, the debut full-length from indie writer/director Yun Shin. The film is entitled "Love In The Age Of Fishsticks" and it recently screened in Cannes!
At preacherboy.com, there is also a new music video, the opening credits to the film, featuring animation by Louis Gonzalez (of Pixar). The film opens with the Preacher Boy song, "I Miss You." To hear the song and view the animated video, please go to http://preacherboy.com/pboymusic.html.
To find our more about Louis Gonzalez, please go to http://www.louisgonzales.com/
***The Hungry Dog Brand, New Album!
The new album from London band The Hungry Dog Brand, produced by Preacher Boy, is set for an October release. Preach produced the album, played on and co-wrote a number of tracks, and oversaw the mixing as well. The album has come out absolutely fantastic, the band has a tremendous sound, the songwriting and vocal talents of lead dog Martin "Hungry Dog" are on full display, and the record is well worth endless listenings. Click the band logo to find out more, or go to http://www.myspace.com/hungrydogbrand
to hear some of the new tracks...
***Roosevelt and Ira Lee
Preach is back! For the first time in literally years, Preach is back in the studio, and back on stage. The project is called Roosevelt and Ira Lee, and features the voices, guitars, and songs of Preach and Will Scott. For more about this very exciting new endeavor, and to hear some new recordings, please go to http://myspace.com/rooseveltandiralee...
There is also a bit of video as well. On Friday, August 17th, Preach played his first show in nearly three years (with Will Scott), and a member of the audience caught it on video, which can now be seen on YouTube.com. The show was at Roanoke Vineyards, on The North Fork of Long Island, New York. To see the video, you can go to YouTube.com and search "Preacher Boy and Will Scott," or you can click here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=1trSaD2zSz0
Thanks as always for listening. Hope everyone is extremely well...

Catching Up
Well, apologies for having been out of touch for so long, but here's a sampling of what's been going on:
-Completed my three-month writing residency in Jack Kerouac's former Florida home. An amazing experience, to say the least, with a book of my writing there soon to be published...to find out more, please go back to the home page, and follow the Writing Link...
-While in Florida, I was commisioned to write a song for a new play by Florida playwright Joseph Reed Hayes, and I performed it at the debut staged reading. The song, entitled "Over There," will be available for listening on the my site soon. In the meantime, for more about Joseph Reed Hayes and the play, please visit:
http://www.burryman.com/plays/shortpage.html#sr
-I have just returned from London, where I was producing the new album from The Hungry Dog Brand, led by singer-songwriter Martin "Hungry Dog" Dowsing. The sessions were fantastic, and fantastically intense. Mixing is to begin soon, but in the meantime, for more about The Hungry Dog Brand, please visit the following sites:
http://www.hungrydogbrand.co.uk/
http://www.myspace.com/hungrydogbrand
-I just finished a writing residency in Ireland. Brilliant! Got to study with American poets Ted and Annie Deppe, novelist Michael C. White, and Irish writers Theo Dorgan, Paula Meehan, and Dermot Bolger...
-Plans for the Will Scott album are coming together, and it's looking like early February for the recording sessions. I'll keep you posted, but in the meantime, for more about Will Scott, please visit:
www.willscottmusic.com
myspace.com/willscottmusic
-Lastly, I will be scoring writer/director Yun Shin's debut feature-length film "Love In The Age Of Fishsticks" this coming February. More soon...
-One other thing to note, Eagle-Eye Cherry has a new live album coming out soon, which will feature two songs co-written with yours truly. For news on that, please visit:
http://eagleeyecherry.com/home.html
That's all for now, thanks, as always, for listening....

2.06.06
Well, my year of "exile" is officially over, and I wanted to write you all and say, first and foremost, how much I've appreciated the supportive e-mails I've received during this difficult time. Secondly, I want to thank you all for your patience, and for your willingness to stay tuned, as it were...
Mainly, I'm happy to say that I am getting ready to take some baby steps towards the world of music again. I definitely ended my year off feeling like there were still musical things I wanted to do in this world. I'm not sure what they are yet, or how I'm going to do them, but I do want to at least (to borrow an old colloquialism) get back up on the horse and see where I can ride to.
So, that said, I've made a few preliminary decisions:
-The first thing I did was ask for my old job back in The Useless Bastards. They're one of the greatest bands I've ever had the pleasure of working with, and it's hands down the most hysterical and musical show imaginable to be involved in. Much to my delight, The Bastards have graciously extended a Welcome Home Preach, and I'm happy to say I'll be playing with them again at Cafe Steinhoff in Brooklyn, New York (back where it all began), on March 1st, 2006. For details on the show, and about all things Bastardly, please visit here:
http://www.uselessbastards.net/
-I've also begun cementing plans to produce an album for Will Scott, a tremendously talented writer, performer, and singer. I've had the pleasure of writing a number of tunes with him over the years, and it will be my great pleasure to be involved in committing those, and other great songs, to an album. I am also making plans to do some live shows with Will, backing him up in the role of multi-instrumentalist. For more about Will Scott, information on upcoming shows, and to hear some music, please visit here:
http://willscottmusic.com/
-I have arranged for Coast Road Records to sever its ties with Redeye Distribution, and we are planning on re-releasing both "Demanding To Be Next" and "The Devil's Buttermilk" via CDBaby. I'll certainly keep you all updated regarding news on that front.
Until all of this gets up and going, and to keep any interested listeners entertained, I've put some new, un-released tracks up on the website. This time, it's a batch of live recordings. You can find streaming audio MP3 tracks here:
http://preacherboy.com/live.htm
In other news, it's actually been quite a good period for me musically, despite not doing anything musical. I have just found out that Eagle-Eye Cherry will be releasing a live album this Spring, and it will include two tracks that we co-wrote together. For more information, please visit here:
http://www.eagle-eye-cherry.com/
Also, a great friend of mine, the supremely talented Colin Brooks, released a new and stunningly wonderful album, entitled "Blood and Water," at the end of last year, and it features two tracks we co-wrote together. If you're not already familiar with Colin, you may remember him from "Demanding To Be Next." We co-wrote "Whistleman" and "My Gold Canoe" together. For more information about Colin and the new album, please visit here:
http://colinbrooks.com/
In addition, I have a song on a movie soundtrack. The song "Bounce" will be featured in the movie "The Fittest," written and produced by The Crook Brothers. For more information about this film, and their other movies as well, please visit here:
http://www.crookbrothers.com/
Lastly, I just found out that a band in Nebraska called Step Thirteen has recorded two of my songs, both of which are from "The Devil's Buttermilk." To hear the tracks, please visit here:
http://stepthirteen.com/audio.html
All in all, not bad for a guy who barely picked up a guitar all year...
So, that's about it for now. Oh, one last thing...As I mentioned in an earlier letter, I have started Grad School, and am now officially en route to getting an MFA in Creative Writing with an emphasis on Poetry. If you happen to be interested, you can find the new poems here:
http://preacherboy.com/writing.htm
And I'm happy to announce that I have recently had two of my new poems (and by poems I mean actual poetry, not song lyrics that were accepted as poetry) accepted for publication by two very wonderful and highly reputable literary journals, "Euphony," the literary journal of the University of Chicago, and "Talking River," Lewis and Clark's literary journal. I will keep you all updated on publication dates. For more about these publications, please visit here:
http://euphony.uchicago.edu/
http://www.lcsc.edu/talkingriverreview/
Which reminds me, the lyrics to "Cemetery Stout" have been published in the latest volume of "In Our Own Words: A Generation Defining Itself," which is a wonderfully rich, international literary anthology featuring the writing of Gen X-ers. For more information about this volume, and the series in general, please visit here:
http://evenstar.net/
Okay, so that's really it. Thank you for your time, and I am happy to say, I look forward to seeing at least some of you out at some shows in the not too distant future. I hope everyone is well.
Regards,
Preach

Preacher Boy News Update:
-The 10-day, 3500-mile Midwestern Mini-Tour is over, and it was a wonderfully successful journey. Please scroll to the end of this e-mail to see a partial thank you list...
-We've gotten some great press recently, both from the tour, and for the album. The album review we're currently most excited about has to be P. Kellach Waddle's Review for Folkwax. Man, I'm not sure we've ever gotten a review more supportive, more understanding, and more blush-inducing than this one. Here's just a sample:
P. Kellach Waddle, Folkwax Review
"...What is communicated in these 13 stunning tracks is a sound like old saddle leather with holes poked in it - with molasses then poured through those holes. The sonic color of (Preacher Boy's) voice rubs against your skin like that - something that is at once rough and ragged - but is also comforting and beautiful. Add a voice like that to songs that are virtually all masterpieces and you have one of the MUST BUY CDs of the year..."
Whew! To read the full review (which features a full, song-by-song analysis), please go to folkwax.com. You'll have to sign up, but it's free, and I promise you, it's worth it. It's a great site, and a treasure trove of information for anyone interested in Roots Music. Once you reach the home page, click the "Front Porch" link to see the review. And please go soon, I think the review only runs for a week...
-also, here's a portion of an album review from London...
Joe Cushley, Blues Matters Review
"...(Preacher Boy) has a pleasantly gravelly delivery, and plucks and slides on his resonators and other steel-strings with a classy, warm aplomb. Some of the songs recall a straighter Tom Waits, and he's written a very fine tribute to Skip James. 'Demanding To Be Next' is a must for modern blues fans who like their songs with a bit of an edge..."
and check out these wonderfully odd excerpts from the road:
John La Briola, Westword Review
"...Soul-patched and nose-ringed for today's Kerouac enthusiast, Preacher Boy tosses off field shouts, plays vintage steel resonators, and honors the likes of Son House, Skip James, and Mance Lipscomb

-The trip to Stockholm to write and record with Eagle-Eye Cherry again was extremely successful, with a number of new songs being written and demoed. Stay tuned for updates on Eagle-Eye's plans for his next album...Also, check out the photo page at preacherboy.com for a shot of Eagle-Eye and Preach in the studio together...
-Preacher Boy's first show in Chicago as a Chicagoan was at Schuba's, supporting the wonderful Big Sandy and his Fly Rite Boys, and it was a ball! Check the photo page for a couple shots from the show...
http://preacherboy.com/gigphotos.html
-There's a new, previously unreleased song that you can download for free at preacherboy.com! The song is called "To Be Young Again", and it's a home studio demo of a brand-new song recorded in Chicago...To download this track, and other free tracks that we periodically make available, please go here...
http://preacherboy.com/unreleasedtracks.htm
-Check out this wonderful new review of "Demanding To Be Next" from the All-Music Guide...
Stewart Mason , All-Music Guide Review (four-and-a-half-stars)
"Preacher Boy might be a young white boy singing the blues, but think Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart more than Led Zeppelin and Bad Company, and throw in some Townes Van Zandt and Gillian Welch as well. For his fifth album, Preacher Boy (known to his mother by the decidedly less bluesy moniker Christopher Watkins) for the first time performs in a strictly solo and acoustic setting: just his agreeably smoky voice and vintage National slide guitar. Waits and Beefheart come immediately to mind because of Watkins' fearlessness when it comes to bending melodies to suit his own whim, not to mention the husky low register of his singing voice. But he's not really out to warp or subvert the blues, as shown by reverential but idiosyncratic readings of standards like Son House's "Death Letter" and Skip James' "Nehemiah James." Watkins understands that the idea is not to mimic one's influences, but to put them in the service of something new. That "old wine in a new bottle" context makes Demanding to Be Next Preacher Boy's best album yet."
Thank you Stewart Mason!

-There's some new stuff up on the website. Here's the rundown:
1. There's a downloadable recording of Preacher Boy's live performance on KFJC on August 27th, 2004. Download it, and you'll be the proud owner of a live and legal eight-song Preacher Boy bootleg! But do remember that it was an 8-song/42 minute performance, and thus an enormous file. To help you handle this, we're offering two quality options, a 19.2 MB version, and a 2.4 MB version. And for those of you disinclined to download at all, there is also a streaming option. For Preacher Boy on the radio, please visit http://preacherboy.com/radio.htm.
2. There's another free download available, and this one is on the "Free Tracks" page. As you may know, every couple of weeks or so, we add a new, unreleased track to this page, maybe a home demo, maybe a studio out-take, maybe a live track. This time, you can download an outtake from the sessions for Preacher Boy's album "The Devil's Buttermilk." The song is "Black and Brown, Lo to the Ground" and you can get it by visiting http://www.preacherboy.com/unreleasedtracks.htm.
3. There's a new page on the site! It's our first foray into showcasing Preacher Boy's literary endeavors. In addition to his work as a musician, Preacher Boy has been published as a poet and a short story writer. Also, he has for some time been working on a literary collection of song lyrics (entitled "Song Pomes") with the intention of seeing it published as a book of poetry, and has been fortunate enough to see quite a few of the pieces already published. On this new page, we'll be regularly uploading Preacher Boy's written works, including both published and un-published short stories, published and un-published poems, and selections from the in-progress manuscript of "Song Pomes". To break the page in, however, we're starting with an essay that Preacher Boy was asked to write for the magazine 3rd Muse, entitled "Constraint and Emancipation-or-Why I Think Song Lyric Ought To Be Considered A Legitimate Poetic Form." To see the new page and read the work, please visit http://preacherboy.com/writing.htm.
That's all for now, thanks for staying tuned!

-New Review of "Demanding To Be Next"
Check out Michael Cote's review of the new album in Blues Revue Magazine:
"On his fifth album as Preacher Boy, Christopher Watkins' stripped-down country blues and folk features just him and his guitars: a 1936 National Steel, a 1938 Martin 0018-G nylon string and a Martin D-16 steel string. The solo acoustic format is a first for Watkins, who made his debut with a pair of albums on Blind Pig in the mid-90's and has toured and recorded with pop star Eagle-Eye Cherry. "Demanding To Be Next" demands attention instantly. On the tender opener "A Little Better When It Rains," Watkins blends fingerpicking and slide. His voice, a cross between those of Kelly Joe Phelps and Tom Waits, has an otherworldly quality that, whether natural or an affectation, makes him sound like no one else and suits his quirky songs well. Flatpicked folk song "Whistleman" packs detailed, offbeat imagery that recalls Dylan's best. Its ominous feeling gets under your skin, setting you up for the album's only cover a few tracks later, a strong reading of Son House's "Death Letter." Likewise, Watkins' slide on "Jackson Street" conjures the kind of old-time train songs he aspires to emulate. Watkins peppers his somber tales with sharp wit. On "My Gold Canoe," he tosses throwaway lines like "Jimmy can't crack corn/If he ain't got no ears" with references to a fourth World War and a passionate romance. Good luck trying to keep the chorus - "It's the very last night/Of the world we knew/And we're going to row on up to heaven/In my gold canoe" - out of your head."

well, the tour is nearing the home stretch, and what a trip it's been. seattle was a monster show, in a gloriously re-done old theater, right above pike place market. sold a truckload of cds that night, thanks to everyone who bought one! the portland show i did on my own, and though it was a rainy sunday, we still had a good ol' time. special treat was that joe mcmurrian, who was on the bill in salem, came out and played a few songs with me. if you haven't heard this guy yet, you must, he's phenomenal. sort of a cross between robert pete williams and kelly joe phelps. eugene was back with charlie again, for a show in a giant tiki bar! very surreal, but another great night. the cd party in sf was a blast, great to see all our old friends, and special bonus, my parents were there! the saratoga show with charlie was unbelievable, at villa montalvo. what a place, it was like playing a theater built on someone's private winery. nuts...sold another truckload of cds that night, thanks everbody! and then along came reno. this time, a mexican restaurant. surreal again. but it was a sold out night, and many cds were sold. thank you! a special thanks due here to charlie's fans, who''ve treated me so well on this trip. charlie and the fellas have been blowin' roofs off, and yet y'all are still being so kind with me, for which i thank all y'all! altadena show was great, back to my own self that night, and that was especially surreal. my extended family was there, including my grandma, and the show went from a silver-haired veteran reading beatnik poetry, to a gang of young fellas playing "free jazz" at peak volume, to preacher boy! next came phoenix, at the legenday rhythm room, run by the great bob corritore, simply one of the best blues rooms around. and now, the motherload show is nigh, it's on to new orleans with charlie musselwhite!

so, the CD has been shipped by the manufacturer, and is on its way to the redeye warehouse!which is very exciting for us, to say the least. for those of you interested in this sort of thing, the artwork was primarily designed by preach and amy marinelli, and brought to graphic fruition by eileen cubbage. the disc was mastered by chris von sneidern out in san francisco, and it was manufactured by Limelight disc and design, also in san francisco. so, we're on track for that april 6th release, and we'll keep ya'll posted on when it comes available for ordering...
